Healthcare accounts for 5% of Belgium's greenhouse gas emissions and employs 416,000 people. It is also a sector that cannot stop operating, and one in which 88% of the population say they trust it, two reasons that make sustainability both a risk management issue and a matter of exemplarity. CHNWL embedded this ambition in its new strategic plan, Cap 29, with three objectives, understanding its maturity level, aligning with the VSME standard ahead of certification, and rolling out an action plan genuinely aligned with the hospital's strategy. ESGlogic began with an ESG maturity scan across four components, environment, governance, social for staff and patients, and social for suppliers. This diagnostic formed the basis for breaking the engagement down into five thematic workstreams, each led by an internal lead, human resources, procurement processes, the VSME tool and carbon footprint, stakeholder mapping, and the double materiality matrix. Building on this, the heavier deliverables followed, a full carbon footprint across scopes 1, 2 and 3 under the GHG Protocol, a double materiality matrix built with the executive committee and then extended to front-line teams, a climate risk analysis integrated into the hospital's existing risk matrix, and the formalisation of procurement, the single largest source of emissions. All of this now converges on three workstreams, seeking external certification to formalise and validate the work achieved, rolling out the carbon reduction action plan on the priority emission sources identified, and championing the topic internally through a communication and awareness campaign.
