What is ISO 50001?

ISO 50001 is the international standard that defines an energy management system (EnMS) to help an organisation to:

  • Improve its overall energy performance
  • Reduce its consumption, energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions
  • Use data to make informed energy decisions
  • Ensure sustainable energy management over the long term

The principle is to steer your energy performance through a methodical approach based on analysing energy uses, setting quantified targets, monitoring consumption and continuous improvement.

This standard works in synergy with ISO 14001 (environment). Both address resource management and environmental impacts.

Frequently asked questions

ISO 50001 focuses exclusively on energy performance, how to reduce and steer your energy consumption. ISO 14001 covers environmental management as a whole, waste, water, soil, biodiversity, emissions. The two standards are complementary and share a common structure that makes them easy to integrate.

Not in general, but yes in some specific cases. Certification remains voluntary for most companies. That said, the European Energy Efficiency Directive (EED, EU/2023/1791) requires an energy management system, ISO 50001 or equivalent, for companies whose annual energy consumption exceeds 85 TJ/year, i.e. around 23.6 GWh/year. European requirements are tightening progressively, getting certified lets you anticipate these changes rather than face them under pressure.

No. The standard sets no energy performance target. It is up to each organisation to define its own objectives, adapted to its starting point.

Yes, without difficulty. The standard applies to any organisation, whatever its size or sector, as soon as it has energy uses to manage.

Yes. Both standards share a common structure, which greatly simplifies the integration of an energy management system if you are already ISO 14001 certified, or the other way round.
